Discord Username Rules to Know

Discord changed its username system in 2023, and the old Username#1234 format is gone. These are the rules that decide what you can claim now.

Usernames are unique and lowercase

A username is 2 to 32 characters and can only use lowercase letters, numbers, periods, and underscores — no spaces, capitals, or symbols. Every account claims its own, so short clean names go fast.

Display names are what most people see

Your display name can be 1 to 32 characters with capitals, spaces, and most symbols, and you can change it freely. A plain unique username plus a styled display name is the combo most members use.

Server nicknames change per community

Each server can set its own nickname for you, so the same account can go by a roleplay name in one place and your gamer tag in another. Roleplay and character names from the generator fit this slot.
